Lake County, Florida is one of the best vacation destinations in Central Florida — and one of the most overlooked. With over 1,000 named lakes, charming walkable downtowns, Florida's largest winery, and a relaxed pace that feels nothing like the theme park corridor 40 minutes east, Lake County is a genuine escape for anyone who wants the real Florida.
Whether you're planning a weekend getaway from Orlando, a full week of lake life, or just passing through and want to know what to see, this guide covers everything you need to plan a perfect trip to Lake County.
🏙️ The Best Towns to Visit
Mount Dora
The most-visited town in Lake County and with good reason. Mount Dora sits on a bluff above Lake Dora, lined with Victorian architecture, antique shops, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. The historic Lakeside Inn (built 1883) is a landmark worth seeing even if you're not staying. The downtown is entirely walkable. Don't miss the waterfront park or a sunset cruise on the lake.
Tavares — America's Seaplane City
Tavares earned the official designation "America's Seaplane City" and owns it — you'll see seaplanes landing and taking off from Lake Dora from the beautiful waterfront boardwalk. The downtown is smaller and quieter than Mount Dora but has excellent waterfront dining and a marina scene. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
Leesburg
Leesburg has a growing downtown with some of the best farmers market vibes in the county. The Saturday Morning Market (downtown Leesburg, 8AM–1PM) is a local institution. Leesburg is also home to Flat Island Preserve — 2,600 acres of wild, quiet trails that feel a world away from everything. Host of the massive Leesburg Bikefest every April.
Clermont
Clermont anchors the south end of the county and is growing fast. The South Lake Trail offers paved cycling along the lakefront. Lakeridge Winery — Florida's largest premium winery — sits just outside Clermont and gives free tours daily. Clermont Waterfront Park on Lake Minneola has a great paved trail and stunning sunset views.
Eustis
Eustis has a quiet, historic downtown with a beautiful central square and good local dining. Lake Eustis itself is gorgeous — part of the Harris Chain of Lakes. Less touristy than Mount Dora but full of character.
