Lake County's premier state park spans 4,372 acres across rolling hills and 13 interconnected lakes. Lake Louisa is the main draw: a clear, beautiful lake with a designated swimming beach, canoe and kayak rentals, and a boat launch. The park also has 20+ miles of multi-use trails through sandhill and wetland habitats.
Camping: Full-facility campsites available ($22–$30/night). Reserve at ReserveAmerica.com. Extremely popular October–April.
Smaller than Lake Louisa but equally rewarding, Lake Griffin State Park sits on the shores of the 9,044-acre Lake Griffin — one of the largest lakes in the county and part of the Harris Chain. The park features a boat launch, picnic pavilions, nature trails through ancient live oak hammocks, and some of the best largemouth bass fishing in Central Florida.
Wildlife highlight: Lake Griffin is home to a large population of American alligators and is a top spot for great blue herons, ospreys, and bald eagles.
The best public swim beach in Lake County. Hickory Point sits on Lake Harris with a soft sandy beach, clear water, covered picnic pavilions, volleyball courts, a fishing pier, and a boat launch. It's a genuinely beautiful spot — the kind of place locals keep to themselves. Weekdays are peaceful; weekends get busy in summer but never overwhelming.
One of Florida's most spectacular wildlife drives. The 11-mile loop around the north shore of Lake Apopka has recorded over 360 bird species, making it one of the top birding sites in the eastern United States. Drive slowly with windows down — roseate spoonbills, snail kites, limpkins, painted buntings, alligators, otters, and deer are common sightings. This is world-class wildlife viewing, free of charge.
Best time: Early morning, October–March for winter migrants.
A hidden gem even among Lake County locals. Ferndale Preserve covers 957 acres of Florida scrub, upland habitats, and rolling hills. The trail system winds through sandhill communities and oak scrub that's home to Florida scrub jays (a threatened species). The high point offers rare panoramic views across the landscape — uncommon in flat Florida. Mountain biking is also popular here.
A unique island preserve in the middle of Lake Harris, accessible only by boat or kayak (no bridge). The 1,000+ acre preserve has primitive trails through pristine Florida wetlands. Great for paddlers looking for a true wilderness experience without leaving the county.
A pleasant county park on the Palatlakaha River, connecting Lake Louisa to Lake Minneola. A fishing pier, nature trail, and kayak launch make it a great quick stop. The river corridor is lovely for a short paddle.
Orange County-managed but popular with Lake County residents, Trimble Park sits in a quiet wooded setting on a lake near Mount Dora. Primitive camping, picnic areas, a boat launch, and a peaceful lakeside atmosphere make it a great low-key escape.
