Smaller than Lake Louisa but equally rewarding, Lake Griffin State Park sits on the shores of the 9,044-acre Lake Griffin — one of the largest lakes in the county and part of the Harris Chain. The park features a boat launch, picnic pavilions, nature trails through ancient live oak hammocks, and some of the best largemouth bass fishing in Central Florida.

Wildlife highlight: Lake Griffin is home to a large population of American alligators and is a top spot for great blue herons, ospreys, and bald eagles.

🦅 Birding & Wildlife Parks

BIRDING & WILDLIFE

Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive

📍 2850 Lust Rd, Apopka (east border of Lake County) | 🕐 Fri–Sun, sunrise–sunset | Free

One of Florida's most spectacular wildlife drives. The 11-mile loop around the north shore of Lake Apopka has recorded over 360 bird species, making it one of the top birding sites in the eastern United States. Drive slowly with windows down — roseate spoonbills, snail kites, limpkins, painted buntings, alligators, otters, and deer are common sightings. This is world-class wildlife viewing, free of charge.

Best time: Early morning, October–March for winter migrants.

Ferndale Preserve

📍 16711 Ferndale Rd, Montverde (near Mount Dora area) | 🕐 Sunrise–Sunset | Free

A hidden gem even among Lake County locals. Ferndale Preserve covers 957 acres of Florida scrub, upland habitats, and rolling hills. The trail system winds through sandhill communities and oak scrub that's home to Florida scrub jays (a threatened species). The high point offers rare panoramic views across the landscape — uncommon in flat Florida. Mountain biking is also popular here.

🌊 Local Tip: Florida State Parks fill up fast for camping. Book Lake Louisa State Park campsites 3–4 months in advance for peak season (November–April). Weekday visits have much lower wait times and more wildlife activity — the animals aren't used to weekday visitors.
