Lake County, Florida is one of the best boating destinations in the entire state. The Harris Chain of Lakes — eight interconnected lakes spanning 35,000 acres — lets boaters travel for miles across connected waterways without trailering. Add in over 1,000 named lakes total, dozens of free public boat ramps, and marinas in every major town, and it's clear why Lake County attracts serious boaters from across Central Florida and beyond.
Here's everything you need to know about boating in Lake County in 2026.
🌊 The Harris Chain of Lakes
The Harris Chain is the crown jewel of Lake County boating. The eight lakes in the chain — Lake Harris, Little Lake Harris, Lake Griffin, Lake Eustis, Lake Dora, Lake Beauclair, Lake Carlton, and Lake Apopka — are connected by navigable canals, allowing a full day of lake-hopping without ever leaving the water.
The chain has no speed restrictions on the main lakes (unlike many Florida waterways) so powerboats, ski boats, and wakeboarding are all common. The canals and connecting channels require slow speeds and are better suited for cruising and fishing.
Top Access Points for the Harris Chain:
- Hickory Point Recreation Park (Tavares) — paved ramp on Lake Harris, parking, picnic area. One of the most popular launch points on the chain.
- Venetian Gardens (Leesburg) — ramp on Lake Harris with excellent parking and restroom facilities.
- Trimble Park (Mount Dora) — ramp on Lake Beauclair, connects directly to Lake Dora and the eastern end of the chain.
- Lake Griffin State Park (Fruitland Park) — ramp on Lake Griffin, the northwestern lake in the chain.
🗺️ Best Boating Destinations in Lake County
Lake Dora — Mount Dora / Tavares
Lake Dora is arguably the most beautiful lake on the chain. The waterfront of Mount Dora and Tavares lines the north shore. Seaplanes land and take off from Tavares. There's a no-wake zone near both town waterfronts but plenty of open water for cruising. The Dora Canal connecting Lake Dora to Lake Eustis is a scenic, tree-canopied passage.
Lake Harris — Leesburg / Tavares
The largest lake on the Harris Chain at over 13,000 acres. Wide open water, excellent fishing, and no speed restrictions make this a favorite for powerboats. The Leesburg waterfront (Venetian Gardens) and the Tavares waterfront both access Lake Harris directly.
Lake Minneola — Clermont
South Lake County's primary boating lake. Clermont Waterfront Park has a good boat ramp. Lake Minneola connects to Lake Palatlakaha and the south lake system. Popular for water skiing and tubing.
Lake Apopka
Once polluted from decades of agriculture and development, Lake Apopka has undergone a major recovery and is now producing excellent fishing and wildlife viewing. The north shore Wildlife Drive is spectacular for birding from a boat. Access from the Lake Apopka North Shore Restoration Area.
