Lake County, Florida is world-class freshwater fishing territory. The Harris Chain of Lakes — eight interconnected lakes covering 35,000 acres — is one of the top bass fishing destinations in the Southeast. Lake Apopka, the fourth-largest lake in Florida, has undergone a stunning ecological recovery and is now producing trophy largemouth bass that have anglers making the trip from across the country. With over 1,000 named lakes total, Lake County offers exceptional fishing virtually everywhere you look.
🎣 Best Fishing Lakes in Lake County
Lake Apopka — Trophy Bass Capital
Lake Apopka was once one of Florida's most polluted lakes — decades of agricultural runoff created a turbid, algae-choked mess. But a massive restoration effort starting in the late 1990s has transformed it. Aquatic vegetation has returned, water clarity has improved dramatically, and the bass population has exploded. Lake Apopka now regularly produces fish over 10 pounds and is one of the hottest bass fisheries in Florida.
Access: Lake Apopka North Shore Restoration Area (off CR-448A, near Zellwood) | Free public access | Boat ramp available
Lake Harris — Consistent Action on 13,000 Acres
The largest lake on the Harris Chain at 13,788 acres. Deep enough for good water quality, diverse habitat from open water to thick hydrilla beds, and enough pressure relief across the acreage to consistently find active fish. Both largemouth bass and black crappie fishing are excellent year-round.
Top access: Hickory Point Recreation Park (Tavares) | Venetian Gardens (Leesburg)
Lake Griffin — Underrated and Undervisited
Lake Griffin covers 3,000+ acres on the northwest end of the Harris Chain. Often overlooked in favor of Harris and Apopka, Griffin gets less fishing pressure and consistently produces quality bass and crappie. Lake Griffin State Park provides a good boat ramp and camping for multi-day fishing trips.
Lake Eustis — Variety Fishing
Connected to Lake Dora via the Dora Canal, Lake Eustis is a middle-chain lake with excellent variety fishing — largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker, and crappie all thrive. Shore fishing access in downtown Eustis is a bonus for anglers without a boat.
Johns Lake — Local Favorite Near Clermont
Johns Lake in south Lake County near Clermont gets less pressure than the chain lakes and rewards anglers who know it. Excellent structure fishing around fallen timber and vegetation edges. Good bass fishing year-round with a reputation for producing quality catches.
Access: Johns Lake Boat Ramp on Johns Lake Road, Clermont
Lake Minneola — Easy Access from Clermont
Good shore fishing from Clermont Waterfront Park for bass, bluegill, and catfish. The boat ramp offers easy access. Popular with families and casual anglers for an afternoon on the water without driving far.
🐟 What's Biting — Species Guide
Largemouth Bass
The king of Lake County fishing. Lake County has produced bass over 14 pounds. Best action in spring (February–April) when bass move shallow to spawn. Topwater lures at dawn and dusk, soft plastics in vegetation, and crankbaits along structure all produce. Lake Apopka and Lake Harris are the top spots.
Black Crappie (Speckled Perch)
One of the most popular table fish in Florida. Lake Griffin and Lake Harris are both excellent for crappie, especially in winter (December–February) when they school and bite aggressively. Small jigs and minnows fished near docks, brush piles, and vegetation edges produce well.
Bluegill & Shellcracker
Excellent year-round in almost every lake in the county. Crickets and worms on small hooks under a bobber — it doesn't get more classic than this. Kids' first fishing experience material. Lake Eustis and Lake Minneola are both great.
Channel Catfish
Night fishing with cut bait or chicken liver on the bottom of any of the chain lakes or larger ponds. Lake Harris and Lake Dora both have good catfish populations. Catfish tournaments are popular in Leesburg and Tavares.
