Lake County, Florida is an outdoor recreation paradise hiding in plain sight. With over 1,000 named lakes, 100+ miles of trails, and a landscape that ranges from pine flatwoods and cypress swamps to rolling hills and clear spring runs, Lake County offers more variety than almost anywhere else in Central Florida. And most of it is free.
Here's the complete guide to outdoor activities in Lake County in 2026 — from the best hikes and kayak launches to where the fish are biting.
🥾 Hiking & Walking Trails
Flat Island Preserve — Leesburg
The crown jewel of Lake County hiking. 2,600 acres of wetlands, pine flatwoods, and palmetto scrub with multiple trail loops. Almost always quiet. The trailhead on Flat Island Road is easy to find, parking is free. Watch for sandhill cranes, gopher tortoises, and the occasional deer. Best in early morning.
Distance: 2–8 miles depending on loop | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Free
Lake Hiawatha Preserve — Clermont
A beautiful 387-acre preserve with loop trails through pine flatwoods and wetland edges. Well-maintained, clearly marked, and excellent for birdwatching. The preserve connects to Clermont's trail network for longer rides or walks.
Distance: 3–5 miles | Difficulty: Easy | Free
Van Fleet State Trail
A 29-mile paved rail trail through Green Swamp at Lake County's southern border. Popular with cyclists and long-distance hikers. The trail passes through rural Central Florida with almost no road crossings — a genuine escape into Florida wilderness.
Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area — Leesburg
Best known for birdwatching but also has good walking trails. Thousands of wintering waterfowl. The marsh boardwalk section is excellent for photographers.
🛶 Kayaking & Paddling
Harris Chain of Lakes
Eight interconnected lakes covering 35,000 acres in the heart of Lake County. You can paddle for days — Lake Harris, Lake Griffin, Lake Eustis, Lake Dora, Lake Beauclair, Lake Carlton, Lake Apopka (south end), and Little Lake Harris are all connected by canals. Put in at Hickory Point Recreation Park in Tavares for easy access.
Palatlaha Creek
A narrow, shaded creek near Umatilla that offers a completely different paddle experience — slow-moving, forested, and full of wildlife. Excellent for beginners and families. Look for river otters, herons, and turtles.
Lake Minneola — Clermont
Clermont Waterfront Park has kayak and paddleboard rentals on Lake Minneola. The lake is calm in the morning and the views of the rolling Clermont hills from the water are uniquely beautiful for Florida.
Wekiva River (south Lake County)
The Wekiva flows through southern Lake County into Wekiva Springs State Park. Crystal-clear spring water, cypress canopy, alligators, and manatees in winter. One of the best paddles in all of Florida.
