Fruitland Park, Florida is a small lakeside community of about 4,000 residents situated on the northeastern shore of Lake Griffin — part of the famous Harris Chain of Lakes — and perfectly positioned between Leesburg and Lady Lake in central Lake County. It may be one of Lake County's smallest cities, but its natural amenities, particularly the stunning Flat Island Preserve and access to Lake Griffin, make it well worth a visit for outdoor lovers.
Whether you're here to fish, birdwatch, hike the boardwalk over the lake, or simply use it as a quiet base for exploring the rest of the county, Fruitland Park has more to offer than its modest size suggests.
🌿 Flat Island Preserve — Hidden Gem
Flat Island Preserve
Off US-27, Fruitland Park, FL 34731 — This Lake County natural area is one of the most underrated nature experiences in all of Central Florida. A scenic boardwalk extends out over Lake Griffin, passing through towering cypress trees draped in Spanish moss before opening onto the lake with sweeping views. An exceptional birdwatching destination — bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, anhingas, and wood storks are commonly seen. Free entry. Open dawn to dusk. Bring bug spray in summer.
The preserve connects to a trail system that explores the Lake Griffin shoreline. Morning visits during fall and winter are particularly magical when mist rises off the lake and wading birds are most active.
