Umatilla, Florida is a small but strategic town in northeastern Lake County — sitting right at the edge of the Ocala National Forest with easy access to crystal-clear springs, excellent freshwater fishing, and some of the most untouched natural Florida you'll find anywhere in Central Florida. If you want to escape the crowds and find the real Florida, Umatilla is your jumping-off point.
Population around 3,500, Umatilla sits at the intersection of SR-19 and SR-42 — making it a natural crossroads for outdoor adventurers. Here's everything to do in and around Umatilla in 2026.
🌿 Ocala National Forest — Right Next Door
Umatilla's biggest advantage is its proximity to the Ocala National Forest — the southernmost national forest in the continental US and one of Florida's most spectacular outdoor destinations. The forest begins just minutes east of town.
Alexander Springs (Ocala National Forest)
~12 miles east on CR-445 — Alexander Springs is one of Florida's most beautiful first-magnitude springs, pumping 76 million gallons of crystal-clear, 68°F water daily. Swim, snorkel, or paddle the spring run. Canoe and kayak rentals available on site. Entry fee: $6/person. Operated by the US Forest Service. Camping available.
Juniper Springs Recreation Area
~20 miles east on SR-40 — Another iconic Ocala National Forest spring with a historic Civilian Conservation Corps mill house, swimming area, and the famous Juniper Creek canoe run (7 miles, takes 4–5 hours). Canoe rentals available. Entry fee: $6/person. One of Florida's classic spring experiences.
Lake Dorr Recreation Area
~8 miles east on SR-19 — A quiet lakeside area in the Ocala National Forest with a swimming beach, picnic area, and boat launch. Less crowded than the springs. Free entry.
Florida National Scenic Trail (Ocala Section)
The Florida Trail passes through the Ocala National Forest just east of Umatilla. Day hikers can access multiple trailheads for everything from a quick 2-mile nature walk to multi-day backpacking. The forest section is known for towering longleaf pine and scrub habitat — some of the best in the state.
🎣 Fishing in Umatilla
Umatilla sits between two of Lake County's best fishing lakes:
Lake Umatilla
The 2,300-acre lake that borders Umatilla's eastern edge. Public boat ramp at City of Umatilla waterfront. Known for excellent largemouth bass, crappie, and bream fishing. The lake connects to Lake Yale via canal, giving anglers access to a large two-lake system.
Lake Yale
Just north of Umatilla — Lake Yale is a 4,048-acre lake celebrated for outstanding bass fishing and relatively low fishing pressure compared to better-known lakes. Several boat ramps provide access. Trophy bass are caught here regularly in the January–April peak season.
- Target species: Largemouth bass (trophy potential), black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish
- Best months: January–April for bass; crappie and bream are good year-round
- Licenses: Florida freshwater fishing license required (16+) — purchase at myfwc.com or local tackle shops

🦅 Wildlife Watching & Birding
The Umatilla area is exceptional for wildlife. The Ocala National Forest is one of the last strongholds of the Florida black bear, and the lakes and forest edge support a remarkable variety of birds.
- Bald eagles: Commonly seen along Lake Umatilla and Lake Yale, especially November–March during nesting season
- Florida sandhill cranes: Year-round in the agricultural fields and lake edges around Umatilla
- Florida scrub-jay: One of the few places in Central Florida to reliably find this endangered species — look in the scrub habitat along SR-19 into the national forest
- Osprey: Abundant over the lakes from spring through fall
- Wild turkeys: Common along forest roads at dawn and dusk
